    Engineering the Microclimate: Designing Spaces for Perfect Löyly

    Löyly lasts only a moment, but the room must be designed for it from the beginning.

    A good sauna is a carefully balanced microclimate shaped by temperature, humidity, airflow, materials and room geometry. When these elements work together, heat feels deep without becoming aggressive, steam moves naturally through the room, and breathing remains comfortable.

    When Water Meets Stone

    In a dry sauna, the body is warmed mainly by hot air and surrounding surfaces. The moment water reaches the stones, the character of the room changes.

    Humidity rises, perspiration evaporates less easily, and the same air temperature suddenly feels much warmer. Löyly also carries heat through the space, creating a more complete and enveloping sensation.

    This is why two saunas at the same temperature can feel entirely different. The thermometer tells only part of the story.

    A Microclimate That Can Move

    Good löyly is about allowing heat, moisture and fresh air to move in balance.

    Too little humidity can feel dry and sharp. Too much, without sufficient air movement, becomes heavy. Ventilation, heater placement, bench height, ceiling geometry and wall construction all influence how löyly develops and reaches the body. None of these elements works alone.

    Hempcrete and Thermal Stability

    Hempcrete plays an important role in the Steam Spirit environment. Its porous mineral structure can moderate changes in moisture, while its thermal mass allows the walls to absorb and release heat gradually. Rather than reacting instantly to every change in temperature and humidity, the room develops a calmer, more stable character.

    Ventilation controls air movement. Hempcrete helps stabilise the environment around it. The result is something experienced rather than noticed: the room simply feels settled.

    Stone at the Centre

    Steam Spirit uses Finnish IKI heaters for their large exposed stone mass. The stones store substantial thermal energy and allow water to evaporate across a broad heated surface. Instead of producing only a sharp burst of heat, the heater can create a fuller, softer volume of steam that spreads through the room. The character of löyly can even change depending on where and how water is poured.

    One System

    The heater stores heat. Stone transforms water into vapour. Ventilation gives that vapour direction. Room geometry places the body within it. The surrounding structure moderates the changing climate. Good löyly comes from the relationship between all of them.

    This is the principle behind Steam Spirit: not designing a room around equipment but designing the entire room around the experience of heat, steam and air.
